Context
In 2024, ACW pursued public opinion on the implementation of a Short Term Rental Bylaw. They had an amazing 700+ responses! The recent October 2025 survey however, only received 67. You can download and review the detailed responses below.
In the recent agenda for the final STR Committee meeting, before it goes to council vote, they’ve justified the initiative with a summary of survey results. Unfortunately the summary does not truly capture the detail and nuance of public opinion. If this bylaw impacts you, download and read the opinions and concerns of your friends and neighbours.
61%* were in agreement that STRs should be regulated and licensed by ACW
*percentages based on respondents that indicated an opinion.
However, when you include the ‘no opinion’ positions, the picture is quite different. In the 2024 survey, roughly:
- 1/3 expressed positive views about STRs.
- 1/3 expressed negative views about STRs.
- 1/3 had no opinion either way.
Presenting the result as “61% were in agreement” is misleading. At best, it suggests that one third of all respondents supported STR licensing.
-
65%* support licensing
-
70%* support occupancy limits
-
75%* support parking requirements
-
79%* support noise regulations
-
68%* support fines and enforcement
*percentages based on respondents that indicated an opinion.
There were respondents who had no opinion, and some of those in support of the bylaw, did so only with amendments and qualifiers.
