Since the Melbourne St. resurfacing and the 2026 spring rainfall, there has been severe erosion from misdirected rain runoff impacting the ability of residents to safely navigate to the beach on foot and by vehicle.
These first photos are of the driveways that have been impacted.
The townaship attempted to address some of the problem spots by adding ashphalt shoulders. The force of the runoff, has crumbled the ashphalt and in other spots along the road, compromised the integirty of the pavement. Without a permanent solution, eventually the water will undercut the pavement and lead to further erosion, pavement failure, and increasingly unsafe driving and walking conditions.
With every rainfall more gravel and sand is deposited on the curve heading towards the beach. Crews have been pretty quick to come scrape it to the side as it’s unsafe to come round that corner into unexpectedly slippery gravel. However, each time they plow the debris to the side of the road it becomes more and more unsightly.
Unfortunately, the drain that’s supposed to help with water runoff, is being filled and clogged with gravel and dirt.
Residents are doing their best to clear the road and fix their driveways after each rainfall.
There are small gullies that have been eroded (and filled and then eroded again) into the shoulder of the road in different spots posing a hazard for walkers. Additionally, a hole in the shoulder of the culvert bridge has been washed out, fixed and then washed out again.
